A recent study showed that as much as 18% of all brides are now choosing a destination wedding rather than planning a more traditional event at home! I love this trend, but what is causing the shift? Why are so many couples choosing to travel somewhere to say their vows? What are the pros and cons of a destination wedding? Let me unpack some of that for you! If you’re considering a destination wedding, consider your priorities and all the advantages/disadvantages!
Pro: You get an excuse to travel!
If you’re an adventurer who loves to visit new places or has a favorite travel spot, getting married gives you an excuse to get going! And since many couples choose to honeymoon in or near their wedding destination, you’re *kinda* killing two birds with one stone!
Con: You (and your guests) have to travel! (Haha!)
Although this is fairly obvious, it’s worth stating. The biggest consideration with a destination wedding is the required travel. Long flights, jet lag, and travel expenses may add up to be a severely limiting factor— not just for you, but for your guests as well. Consider which of your guests may not be able to attend: an elderly grandmother or a disabled friend who cannot manage the travel. If you do choose a destination wedding, choosing a location closer to home (with shorter flights or more affordable travel options) might make the difference for someone you’d like to attend!
Pro: You automatically narrow down the guest list!
For those of you who have large families, lots of acquaintances, or a mom who’s insisting on inviting EVERYONE— going with a destination wedding is a great way to keep the event more personal if that’s your preference, without offending anyone. Some of your acquaintance who might normally be peeved not to be invited to your wedding will instead be so thankful they aren’t being asked to attend your destination event!
Con: You automatically narrow down the guest list…
When I got married and COVID completely altered my wedding plans, the biggest thing that I regretted was that my grandma was unable to be there for my wedding. It was such a disappointment for both of us. If you’re a people person like me, you might find it unbearable to imagine not sharing your wedding day with all the people you care about! I mean, when else are you going to be have the chance to introduce your fiancé’s great aunt to your kindergarten teacher?? Like, never.
Pro: You can use your wedding budget creating an experience you’ll never forget!
If you’re looking to take your wedding to the next level and create a truly connective experience that you and your guests will love to be a part of, a destination wedding brings your friends and family together on an adventure totally different from a traditional wedding! Traveling together creates unique memories that no one will ever forget!
And there’s no downside for this one, right? What could be better than celebrating your new marriage in an incredible place with all your favorite people? Destination weddings are truly all the best that traveling, event hosting, and romance have to offer!
